Violin and Guitar (1913) was actually a personal favourite of Juan Gris and is widely believed to be one of the most significant cubist still lifes to ever come to auction.

“It is a symphony of colour, line and symbols. A very sophisticated piece but at the same time very sensual,” declared Christie’s Conor Jordan.

The last time a Gris painting came to auction was in 2008 with the painting “Book, Pipe and Glasses”, which sold for $20.8 Million.

Poussin’s Ordination is making headlines this week as it’s expected to sell at Christie’s for £20 Million when it goes under the hammer on December 7th 2010.  Christie’s will obviously be hoping for a repeat of last year’s Old Masters sale when a Raphael drawing sold for a staggering $47.9 Milliion dollars and a Self-portrait by Rembrandt sold for $33 Million.  The Rembrandt was actually snagged by casino mogul, Steve Wynn.

Poussin's Ordination

Poussin's Ordination

Why all the fuss?

Ordination painted in the 1630’s is actually part of a set of Poussin’s 7 Sacraments. And as part of a set, the selling off of “Ordination” is seen as diminishing the impact of the series by quite a few people. However, of the set of seven “Penance” was already destroyed in a fire, “Baptism” is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington and the other 5 are actually on loan to our very own National Gallery in London.

Speaking about Poussin….

We’ve actually just finished painting a fine art reproduction of Poussin’s The Arcadian Shepherds.  The original is in The Louvre.  If you like Poussin and would love to order a fine art reproduction of any of his paintings, please contact us via email on: tim@fabulousmasterpieces.co.uk or call us on 020 8 354 9280

Henri Stressor’s The Oyster Eater is in the news this month. It’s going up for auction in Paris with an asking price of 1.75 Million Euros!

The oyster eater by henri stresor

The Oyster Eater by Henri Stresor

The Oyster Eater used to be owned by Napoleon’s uncle, Cardinal Joseph Fesch (1763-1839) and is being shown by Bernheimer-Colnaghi at the XXVth Biennale des Antiquaires in Paris from 15 to 22 September 2010.

Not much is known about the artist Henri Stressor apart from the fact he painted several portraits of Louis XIV and the Parisian aristocracy.

If you like the The Oyster Eater and don’t have a spare 1.75 Million Euros to buy it, you can of course always purchase an art reproduction of it. Original dimensions of the painting measure 107cm x 89 cm.

La Grenouillere

Having just come back from Giverny, I thought I’d have to include a post on Monet having seen his wonderful gardens and house. Monet’s & Renoir’s paintings of La Grenouillere really interest me as we’ve done art reproductions of both and they’re surprisingly different.  Surprising, as they painted their paintings at the same time on the same day whilst they were together one Sunday.  La Grenouillere actually means ‘the frog pond’ and was a popular spot for young Parisians to dance and go for a swim. The round floating dock in the centre of both paintings was called ‘le camembert’ because it reminded them of the French cheese.

Renoir’s La Grenouillere

Renoir La Grenouillere

Renoir's La Grenouillere

As you can see from looking at the two paintings even though Monet and Renoir have painted the same scene, they are remarkably different.  For instance, Monet has captured two ladies in long swimming costumes, which you can’t see in Renoir’s painting.  Whilst, if you look carefully at Renoir’s La Grenouillere, he amongst other things  has managed to paint 2 dogs and a sail boat, which is not seen in Monet’s.

Art Reproduction

Fabulous Masterpieces has painted a lot of art reproductions of La Grenouillere over the years, below is an example of our Renoir La Grenouillere hand-painted in oils onto canvas.
